The Caribbean is full of brilliance.
It lives in the caterer building a business from her kitchen. The tradesman whose reputation travels by word of mouth. The designer, consultant, farmer, mechanic, teacher, contractor, retailer and service provider doing excellent work with too little exposure, too few systems and too little access to the wider market.
We do not have a talent problem.
We have a connection problem.
Our islands sit close together, yet too often our businesses remain far apart. It can be easier to find a supplier in North America than a capable business in a neighbouring Caribbean territory. Easier to sell outward than to discover, trust and collaborate with one another. Easier to complain about fragmentation than to build practical systems that reduce it.
The barriers are real. Transportation is expensive. Regional trade is difficult. Communication systems, policies and markets are still too fragmented. Governments and institutions must do more.
But we do not have to wait for every barrier to disappear before we begin building the future we deserve.
